**********************************
1) How to Quit the Program
**********************************
PRESS [ALT-Q] TO END THE PROGRAM.
**********************************
2) Video Modes:
**********************************
SVGA USES VESA 1.2 GRAPHICS MODE 261:
(1024X768 DOTS, 256-COLOR)
Requires about 550K BASE RAM.
Also requires EMM or XMS.
VGA USES GRAPHICS MODE 19:
(320X200 DOTS, 256-COLOR)
Requires about 520K BASE RAM.
CGA USES GRAPHICS MODE 4:
(320X200 DOTS, 4-COLOR)
Requires about 400K BASE RAM.
SVGA WILL RUN, OR DROPS DOWN TO:
HEART.BAT MCGA if you have VGA
HEART.BAT VGA will also use VGA
HEART.BAT CGA if you have CGA.
**********************************
3) About SVGA Video Modes
**********************************
If you have a SVGA video card with
the required amount of memory,
but HEART drops down to VGA mode
you may require a VESA driver.
Most current video cards have the VESA
standard built into the hardware, and
do not require a driver.
We include a generic VESA driver. It
is a copyrighted public domain program,
meaning that it may be distributed
freely but should not be altered.
You MUST read the documentation that
comes with it and install it correctly.
Reboot to remove. It's name is
UNIVESA (for UNIversal VESA driver).
We did not write UNIVESA. Under NO
circumstances can we support, or take
any responsibilities for, UNIVESA.
It is usually better to find the driver
that probably came with your original
disks for your video card and install
that instead, but 95% of the time,
UNIVESA will work just as well.
**********************************
4) RAM Requirements
**********************************
If you do not have sufficient BASE RAM,
The program will go to a lower screen
resolution too, because the lower
resolutions use less Base Ram. Base Ram
is the memory in the first 640K, which
DOS makes available to programs.
If you have trouble running the SVGA
or MCGA versions you may need to free
some BASE RAM by temporarily removing
some TSR programs or DOS SHELLS from
your computer system.
**********************************
5) Windows 3.1 considerations.
**********************************
Multitasking in Windows 3.1 is not
supported in SVGA mode. The Heart,
The Engine of Life should be closed
([ALT-Q]) before returning to
Windows. Additionally, you may
experience difficulty running the SVGA
version from your regular MS-DOS prompt
within Windows. You should either:
Create a PIF file, or: Exit Windows
completely and run our program
from DOS.
**********************************
6) Windows 95 considerations.
**********************************
Windows 95 users usually will need 16
megs of RAM to run the SVGA version
of our heart tutorial because Win95
will not release enough memory
for animation purposes if you have
less RAM. It will swap disk memory
instead. Even though the program needs
only about a meg of RAM, to run with
less than about 16 Megs in Win95 it
appears that you should generally
shut Win95 down and restart in DOS.
With more than 16 Meg, you can write
a shortcut. However if disk swapping
occurs during our animations (i.e.
your hard drive light flashes and
the animations appear excessively
jerky) you might want to try shutting
Win95 down and see if it gets smoother.
The hard drive light should stop
flickering during animation sequences
and the animations should run much
smoother.
**********************************
7) Audio Support.
**********************************
This program supports Sound Blaster
audio cards and 100% compatibles.
However, Sound Blaster is not supported
when run from within Windows.
To hear the audio available in the
program you will need to have a BLASTER
statement in your DOS ENVIRONMENT. See
your sound card's documentation if you
are unsure of how to put a BLASTER
statement in your DOS ENVIRONMENT.
